no real answers here, but in the help MapInfo actually says that a Char
field has a maximum of 250 alphanumerics, strange. i'm not sure where the
number comes from, as access uses 1 byte to store 255 characters, so you
would assume other programs could also store the same amount of information
within the same data parcel size, but maybe MapInfo requires just that
little bit extra to store stuff.

sorry, that's of no help.

i don't use the ODBC stuff with mapinfo/access, (my ODBC options are in
mexican for some reason) preferring to get what i need from mapinfo through
VB, so apart from going through all your tables and making them compatible
with MI, code evaluations may be the only answer. perhaps just an adelaide
phenomenon.

Subject: MI-L 255 character text fields in Access

Hi,

In Access the length of a text field is from 0 to 255 characters but in
MapInfo it is 1 to 254 characters.

If you open an Access table in MapInfo (using ODBC) all text fields that
are defined at 255 characters are opened as Read-Only. Fields that are
254 characters or less in length are editable (assuming that all
requirements for editable ODBC tables are met).

Why is there an inconsistency between Access & MapInfo's text fields and
how can I make a 255 character field in Access editable in MapInfo (and
please don't tell me to make them 254 chars) ?

Thanks,

Chris
