Many thanks to all who helped so promptly - Nigel Tidswell, Leon
Gersekowski, Ian Hull, Cinda Graubard, Andrew Hare - we are up and
printing transparent vector fills.
The key to success was to use an older driver as most suggested.
However, we still couldn't use the HP750C model that should have suited
our plotter - we had to select the HP755CM (C3198B) model. The
successful driver version was 4.60 for NT.
Toggling on & off "Internal Handling for Transparent Vector Fills..."
made no difference to solving the problem with the latest driver 4.61
(and with the successful older driver, plotting was fine with it on or
off).
Summary of Responses:
1. Using the latest driver for HP designjets Under Win2k is going to
leave you bitter and resentful. ...I ended up installing an earlier
print driver.
You have to make sure that the driver files are completely deleted
before installing an earlier version. Windows, in it's infinite wisdom,
will not overwrite driver files with earlier versions (even tho' it's
what you asked for), but will let you think you did!(:/) To remove
unwanted drivers, go Start, Settings, Printers and then go File, Server
Properties. On the Drivers tab, highlight the HP Designjet driver(s) and
click Remove. A reboot is probably a good thing to do, and then you can
install an earlier driver. If you didn't do this before, remove all
Designjet drivers, reinstall the 4.60 version and see what happens.
2. We had a similar problem to you, getting our HP1055CM running with MI
6.5 on Win2000, to print transparent layers. ...... Basically you should
load this older driver that is contained in the attached e-mail, and
forget about anything to do with Win2000. Unfortunately, because you
have already attempted a Win 2000 driver load, your registry is now
"trained" to only accept a Win2000 version driver. You will firstly need
to locate a computer guru in your organisation to find and clean and
reset your registry so that ONLY driver ver. HP DJ 4.4 loads. Our
resident printer guru spent nearly 2 whole days, finding and resetting
my registry files so that ver. 4.4 driver would load. Before that was
done, no matter how many attempts were made at loading ver. 4.4 driver,
that system always retained the later driver version. Everything between
our plotter and MI 6.5 works like a charm now, even though we are
running an old fashioned printer driver.
3. We had a similar problem with our Win 2k machines (MI 5.5) to a HP
750c plotter. The problem turned out to be the Win 2K/XP printer
drivers. The solution (for us anyway) was to use an OLD printer driver
(v4.60) downloaded from HP on the 750C driver page (filename
PL132EN.EXE). The driver is listed for NT4 but works fine for Win 2K/XP.
4. You have to use vector pattern fills. Many geological one available
from ExaMin's Display Tools (they are in Australia, otherwise I would
tell you we resell it.) 30 day timed out free eval available to try
them. Let me know if you need any help with finding the eval, or using
the fills. We use them all the time. They work great, you can actually
modify them with a bit of pluck; importantly you choose the density and
size of the fill "pattern" "vector-stamp" for the desired scale of
output. Also includes standard patterns used by AGSO. We almost NEVER
use the MapInfo fills when we need (reliable) output.
Rod's Note: Exa-Min are 2 blocks away and we have their vector fill mbx
and can recommend it - but we still have plenty of uses for the MI
transparent fills.
5. Try this - In preferences, output preferences Tick both the internal
handing options in printing box and window export box I had a similar
problem where the transparent vector fills.
Thanks again
Rod Dawney

Original Query:
We have just "upgraded???" to Win2000, and are having the vector hatch
printing problems similar to those reported previously here.
No matter what we try based on the responses to those reports, some (not
all) of the hatch patterned regions will print solid black on our HP750C
(on local LPT1).
We have tried:
* downloading latest Win2000 driver from HP
* changing most settings and combinations thereof of in
"Preferences\Output Settings"
* reloading - restarting
* printer on & off
Anyone have some ideas to help?
