I was at the MapInfo User Group UK Meeting in Cardiff last week where this
was brought up. From what I understood from what the MapInfo reps said, it
does at least sound like very positive news. You should be able to forget
about MapBasic, but only if you want to - it will remain supported
apparently. As for developing in VS.NET, you should be able to have access
to all the functions you currently have within MapBasic, but within a class
oriented structure. I am unsure whether the nomenclature will look more
like MapX or MapBasic, but there will have to be some compromise. Whilst I
said that MapBasic will remain, I don't know whether MapX will retain the
same classes in the future for backwards compatibility. Whatever, it should
be easier to share code between web and windows apps.

As for time scales, I was told there was nothing they could give me yet.
However, there could be something on the beta front soon (I read this as
this year). Production versions in the first half of 2003 I believe.

Whilst I accept what has been said about false dawns, this does sound as if
the sun is about to rise. You can call me naive in a couple of months!
