I have a LOT of experience with this. Using 6.0, I can tell you that I have had
the best results with using the SDTS translator from the site listed below. I
then use my own convertor to make a MIF file out of the DEMs because I tile them
together and it requires quite a bit of correction to get this to come out
right. However, I have opened single DEM's using the DEM to grid tool under
Utilities and had success. Keep in mind that true 30m "Native" format DEM's
(purchased from USGS, not converted from SDTS) do not have a break (CR/LF I
think) every 1024 characters, while the translated files from SDTS do. MI may
not be expecting the break, but I think that this is unlikely.
