Micheal,

we have been experiencing simialr problems too after upgrading to MU7 on
Windows 2K, on brand new Compaq w4000 workstations. All other software
works much quicker on these machines, as expected, apart from MI7. The
slowest operations seem to be opening map or browser windows. For
example, when opening a new browser the border of the frame appears, and
in the lower info bar the the text "records 1-17 of 20000" (or simialr)
will appear but it will often to be a number of seconds before the
actual browser data appears. Similar things happens with a map, the zoom
width appears seconds before the actual map objects.

I dont believe that it is a network problems as I have tried it with TAB
files saved on the local C drive, and also lower spec machines on the
same network do not have the same problems.

Any advice welcome,

TIA

Dave

  First off the hardware :

  I have a Compaq 2.4 Ghz P4, 512 mb ddr, 60 Gb Hdd machine
running Win2000. My tab files are stored remotely on an Alpha server,
reserved for mapping data, and at this point in time, I am the only user
of
this server, except for some telnet inquiries.

  Now the problem:

My problem is that this system runs MapInfo slower than the
old 866, win98se machine I upgraded from, which was running under the
same
configuration with regard to networking, and now the problem developed
to
something unworkable.

Specifically I'm trying to run a continuous polyline through
various points, this line in total is 3.2Km in length. As I join points
together currently visible on the screen every thing is fine. A soon as
the
machine autopans toward the next point, the map refresh is not smooth,
leaving a vertical stagger between data displayed. This makes connecting
the
points impossible as Mapinfo will no longer snap to points.

I'm looking for information on advanced configurations for
Win 2000 to improve its useability, or some advice that confirms MapInfo
runs more efficiently on Win98SE or XP Pro.

All other standard office and CAD apps. have shown an
increase in speed so I don't think that the problem is hardware based.
