I do not know if it can be used to solve the problem but I have noticed that patterns 3 to 8 are duplicated in the brush palette by others (22, 26, 29, 24, 41, and 44), with a major difference: the first ones are MI hard coded and are much better to print, they keep a nice space between "strokes". The second series are bitmap defined and are much less effective for retaining their clarity in printing. More details in www.paris-pc-gis.com/mb_r/doc/doc_start.htm under "Brush patterns"
Could it be that this difference in definition is the source of the problem? Thanks for your suggestions. Unfortunately I had no real progress with this but to know, that I can't print some of the first patterns (3 to 7) properly. The rest works fine. Neither downgranding the printer driver, nor changing the print options inside mapinfo seem to solve the problem. I also tried to save the Layouts to PDF with the Acrobat PDF-Writer, but similar problems showed up: In this case, the patterns appear coloured, but either half transparent or complete opaque. They have still nothing in common with the original patterns (diagonal lines) in MI. I assume, this is rather a MI problem, than a problem with printer drivers, as I have various problems with different printer drivers. Also a Deskjet Driver (DJ 930c) didn't print the patterns as expected. They were printed as fine lines, but with a half transparent grey background between them. I even get different results in the same Layout. In two map windows displayed in the same layout, the same pattern is printed well in one map, but printed solid black on the other.
