Only a couple of responses to my problem but one was a winner. Doug Wilson (who happens to work only a couple km away from me!) noted that the zoom display setting gets switched on during grid imports and might be set to turn off the display. This was indeed the case and despite all my manipulations I never happened to hit upon a zoom level that corresponded to the bounds magically defined during importation. Thanks Doug, and Ole Gregor (who suggested a potential error but not the one I made).

A few years back one of my first projects with VM was to import an
ascii grid file. VM choked. TechSupport (then NorthwoodGeo) confirmed
the import did not work as advertised but that the next version would
solve the problem. I've gone back and tested this import with each
subsequent upgrade and, although the import now runs all the way
through, I am yet to get a useable grid.

Currently, using VM 3, when I import my ascii grid the resultant file
is invisible. The dimensions appear correct and if I look at the
colour histogram all the classes show up with actual frequencies and
associated colors. If I reclassify and created another grid I can
still get a nicely colored legend but the mapper window is still
blank.

Has anyone else ever encountered a problem like this, or better yet,
a solution?
