AS for me, I'm looking forward to the switch to .NET because it opens up so many more possibilities. Yes, it will require some investment in time and money to get up to speed with the technology, but I think it will cost more in the long run not to move with the times.
But your idea is still a good one. Even tools built for an old environment will be useful for everyone (MapInfo 8.0 will still run the standard MBXs.) The open source nature of the project ensures that tools can be used in new environments, perhaps even without modification. You might also take a look at how the Open Source community organizes these sorts of efforts; SourceForge http://sourceforge.net/ is a good example.
