Thanks, Andy...other people have also suggested that. The one problem with that (even if you don't mind losing the link to the attribute data) is that the dots won't scale with the text, so it's almost impossible to judge whether or not you're placing the text label close enough to the dot...

The utility converts the new labels (fixed size) into text objects (scale as you zoom). Click on the Tools Menu and choos Tool Manager. On the list you should see Labeler.
