You could also use two windows, a Layout and a Map,
that you can see at the same time.

To adjust labels, zoom the layout to "actual Size", 
then scroll around the two windows as needed, dragging
the labels around in the Map window, but looking at the 
Layout to see if they're "correct".

It's clunkier than what you're used to in Arc8, to be
sure, but it's not that bad.

Thanks, Andy...other people have also suggested that.  The one problem with
that (even if you don't mind losing the link to the attribute data) is that
the dots won't scale with the text, so it's almost impossible to judge
whether or not you're placing the text label close enough to the dot...

There is an included function called Labeler that allows you to go back 
to MapInfo version 3.0 labels.  The utility converts the new labels 
(fixed size) into text objects (scale as you zoom).

Click on the Tools Menu and choos Tool Manager.  On the list you should 
see Labeler.  Check the option for loaded and then you will have an 
entry on the tolls menu for this utility.
