Thanks for the response. I'd read your response to a similar question on 5 March (same as the one here) and was hoping it would be the solution. Unfortunately, the resized labels need to be moved by an amount proportional to their size (i.e. a 20 character label moves twice as much as a 10 character one). An added problem is that rotated labels also need to be moved in a different direction.
Any further suggestions for something I could do differently?

Although extremely inelegant, the labeller.mbx route will do the job. The step you are missing is to select all of the correctly sized labels and move them as a group. I like to key in on a critical area before resizing so I have a better idea on where to reposition. Then it's trial and error to get them exactly right. With all the labels selected, use shift-select twice (the first time deselects) to move the entire group.
