I recently lobbed a query to the list regarding a problem I was having using MapCheck. Most of the responses I had were inquires as to what is MapCheck. So...
MapCheck, an application formerly included in the Data Kit Tools, is now available for free. This program will identify, but not fix, problems with boundary (region) objects that may occur in your data. These problems include self-intersections, duplicate nodes, and spikes.

Evan MacDougall suggested modifying the tab files to make sure they corresponded to an early version. A good suggestion, since MapCheck is rather dated, but no cigar. The files I wanted to check were already of an early version (3) and the program had worked successfully on one of the same files last week.
As an aside Stefan Majtan (a list participant) has a handy utility that can be used to modify the version number of MapBasic utilities which can be easier than modifying the version of many files (as long as the mbx does not invoke commands not in the version it is being changed to).
So my problem remains unsolved. One of those vexing window problems that with luck will depart as mysteriously as it arose.......

Hello Mappers,
I'm having a perplexing problem using MapCheck. I haven't had too much experience with the utility but I have used it on occasion without problem and found it useful in detecting potential issues with files.
Today I started getting an error indicating that MapCheck is unable to open files to read. I can't think of many things to try; I've restarted MapInfo, restarted the computer, reinstalled MapCheck to no avail. The files open just fine in MapInfo. I get the error even when tested using a file, at the same location, that MapCheck could inspect last week.
Any suggestions? MI version 7/Win2000.
