Hi Andre,

You NEED a DEM to make a shaded relief in your map. A DEM can be created by interpolating points derived from elevation contours. You can interpolate it directly in MapInfo (Map>Create thematic
map>Grid) or, better, use one of specialized interpolation programs such as Grid Analyser, Vertical Mapper etc. I prefer Grid Analyser (www.terris.com) because it has very good spline
interpolation method for creating DEMs and it works with grids in MIG (MapInfo Grid) format. Furthermore, it can shade whatever grid with any DEM underlying it, which is very useful for
depicting elevation in your data. Fully functional demo is freely downloadable (but works only a few days until it expires). To extract points from contour lines use one of free utilities
downloadable from, for instance, http://www.directionsmag.com/tools.

Hope it helps,

Hi, all,

I am wondering if it is at all possible to introduce shading of a map's
relief, i.e. to put a dark shade over areas that ly in the 'shadow' of a
mountain, assuming there is a lightsource illuminates the map from a certain
direction and a certain elevation.

One occasionally sees maps that do have this type of shading and I'd like to
experiment with it in my maps. I do include elevation countours, but would
like to see what the effect would be by adding relief shading. Does one need
a DEM of the map area, or is there a way to do the necessary calculations
from the positions and elevation values of the contours?

TIA.
