Andre,

Do you have a copy of Vertical Mapper?

If you do, get a hold of a DEM of the area that you want to look at. If it
is larger than a quad sheet, it would be benificial to merge the DEMs into
one raster to speed processing and make a smooth transition in elevation
coloring. Now the next step is fairly simply, simply click on the colour
button in the vertical mapper window when you have your raster image
highlighted. This brings up the window to adjust the colour profile of the
raster. At the bottom left of the window is a check box for Relief shading.
Check this and then select the properties. From here you can adjust the
height of you light source and the direction from which it shines. It is
good to experiment with different directions, brightness, and contrast to
ensure that you have maximum visiablity of the areas that are most important
to you.

Another way to preform this function is through the aspect function of
Vertical Mapper but it does not make as smooth of a color scheme.

Cheers!

Subject: MI-L Relief shading

Hi, all,

I am wondering if it is at all possible to introduce shading of a map's
relief, i.e. to put a dark shade over areas that ly in the 'shadow' of a
mountain, assuming there is a lightsource illuminates the map from a certain
direction and a certain elevation.

One occasionally sees maps that do have this type of shading and I'd like to
experiment with it in my maps. I do include elevation countours, but would
like to see what the effect would be by adding relief shading. Does one need
a DEM of the map area, or is there a way to do the necessary calculations
from the positions and elevation values of the contours?

TIA.
