semi-OT

i use a korg synthesizer, which has werked just fine for the last decade on
a simple serial port connection. one day i ... installed ... XP, and not
only did my korg no longer werk, it actually put the computer into stasis.

no, it wasn't like a traditional lock/hang that we so know and love, it was
a purely suspended animation, whereby i could be half way through a major
processing task, plug in the korg, everything absolutely freezes, i mean NO
input or feedback whatsoever, not even the mouse, then you unplug the korg,
and XP continues as if nothing happened. weird.

after a while, i found some documentation on the net that said i had to
rewire my serial lead to werk on exactly the same hardware under XP. i did
that, and it werked just fine again. go figger.

Bill,

XP is wonderful at making things "easier" so that "average users" can set
things like networks up. I ran the wizard one time and lost the ability
for all my other machines to see the shares on XP, even if they were
logged in as the same user. Several months later, I found that it you
don't have a password on your guest account, it works again...go
figure..... But if it were perfect, we wouldn't upgrade to the next beta
release.

I have one major client that has a number of applications crashing since
they have "upgraded" to XP, including MapInfo or rather my MapBasic app.
No problems using the same app on Win2000 on the same data. Something to
do with apps trying to write to protected space, i suspect. Unfortunately,
guess who has to sort the problems out, and its not microsoft.

PS. lose the puppy. there is nothing more frustrating when things aren't
well than a MS puppy/ paperclip wasting time when your angry. except
perhaps the semantic reminder to renew your subscription while doing a
presentation.
