One thing I've found useful with my home copy of XP is the 'Compatibility
Wizard' - you can set some programs to run in what I assume is emulation
mode, eg if it behaved itself under 98, set it to run as if it still were.
Look under the help - not sure about hardware issues though.

It sorted out my problems with Office 97 anyway...

Subject: MI-L Compiling MB apps with UltraEdit and XP

I'm trying to move my MB development platform from Win98 to XP,
and it seems that batch files don't run the same. I compile MB
files from within UltraEdit, and this line in MI_Compile.bat used
to work fine:

start/wait "c:\Program Files\MAPINFO\MapBasic\MAPBASIC.EXE"
-NOSPLASH -D %1.mb

Now I get an error:
'C:\Program' is not recognized as an internal or external
command, operable program or batch file.

I suppose I need more quotes; does anyone know where?
