Hello Jacques,

There are actually only three time zones in mainland Australia but there is
a mixture in observance of daylight savings time (DST). This is probably
what your respondent was talking about.

Here's the information for Australia from our global time zone layer:

Western Australia: GMT+8, No DST
South Australia: GMT+9.5, DST: +1 (26 Oct 03 - 28 Mar 04)
Northern Territory: GMT+9.5, No DST
Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, Tasmania, Victoria: GMT+10,
DST: +1 (26 Oct 03 - 28 Mar 04)
Queensland: GMT+10, No DST

There are some exceptions in Australia... places near a state border where
they observe the TZ/DST from across the border for convenience. This happens
in quite a few places in the world. E.g. Canada. I have not listed them
here. Also unlisted are islands (e.g. Lord Howe, GMT+10.5 with DST as
above).

Often initially confusing for folks in the northern hemisphere is that
Australia (and other places in the southern hemisphere) have DST during
"our" winter time - which is of course their summer. This can make time
difference calculations a bit confusing. For instance, the time difference
between London and Melbourne is 9 hours during my (UK) summer, and
(currently) 11 hours during my winter.

Europa Technologies will be launching a web site later this year which will
allow you to query exact times anywhere in the world. You will be able to
build you own set of locations and instantly see clocks for all those
location on a single web page. It will not be the first site of this nature
but hopefully one of the most informative and best presented.

Hope that helps.

Subject: MI-L what time down under?

I have made available on our site for a while a world map of time zones and
someone notified me today that if the map was basically "great", Australia
was wrong. He based his comment on the data given by
http://www.worldtimeserver.com/ that seem to indicate that there are at
least 5 different local times compared to the 3 in "my" map.

Would anyone have a simple map of the time zones for Australia with which I
could update mine? And do you have "summer" time and when would it apply?
Could the discrepancies come from summer time being in use now?

TIA

Jacques Paris
