It will create an .mbx but you probably have a call or declare to a function it can't find in the current module. It then assumes it's part of a project so it creates an .mbo which is the file extension for a "MapBasic Object" you can create an .mbx from .mbo's by linking them in one project. It allows MapBasic developers to modularize their code so individual .mb files do not get so large as to be impossible to read and maintain.
