If you have just a few clients and are considering SpatialWare, you can
reduce the cost of the SQL Server by purchasing MS SQL Server Development
Edition ($50 US) and using MSDE, this will even allow you to run SpatialWare
under Windows 2000 Professional instead of Server. MSDE is available free
from Microsoft and is included with Office XP, and Delphi 8(I wouldn't be
surprised if MSDE was included with the MS SQL Server Development Edition as
well).

You don't have to purchase the SQL Server Development Edition, but it give
you the tools to build and manage the database. There are some licensing
requirement with MSDE that you should check.

This option may become more viable since MapInfo has stopped selling MapInfo
Professional for SQL Server.

Hi Sren,

It depends on your definition of "easy". I'm sure MapInfo Sales Support can
tell you that SpatialWare is easy - to _purchase_ ;-D

No really, Pro was never built to function well in a multi-user environment.
It's desktop centric, no more no less. Multi-user setups require "major
league" databases as Oracle or MS/SQL.

And since all real development of Pro has been on hold since 6.0, you're
stuck with the more-or-less applicable work-arounds for the time being.

Hi,

Thanks for the shocking answers; I thought it would be easy to set up a
server application :( It looks like I have to keep the files on local
machines after all and still use Uffe Kousgaard suggestion.

>If you have 10 users, that update various parts of a database, then
>have a
field called userid and give it a value from 1-10, depending on who modifies
that part of the network. When you get the updates back from user 7, delete
all records where userid=7 and then append the records from user 7, where
userid=7. This even allows you to give the users a larger part of the
database, than just the part they are going to update.<

Why has MapInfo not developed an easy server solution??!!

Regards
Soren

Hi all,

I'll add yet another concern to have in consideration: any standard MapInfo
Pro will thrash any 3rd party setup since supporting intelligent TAB
multi-editing is not natively supported by Pro (with proper locks etc.).

To succeed one needs a stringent environment, in which every single client
conforms to the multi-editing setup and abstains from using all the standard
table opening and updating methods. Including all tools from various sources
!

Unless one has few users and dilligent IT enforcers, the setup will break at
some point. I think this comes under what Paul calls "Resilience".

I know that Michel talks about MapX, and here its much simpler, but
multi-editing is inherently more interesting to contemplate in a Pro
environment.

Don't know if v8 will come to provide the necessary mechanisms to implement
record/table locking.
