ha, i recently discovered much the same... without knowing the reason. i was looking for information in some PHP files the other days, and that frickin mutt (now switched off/deleted) tells me what i want isn't in them.
why the hell it can't just accept that i want the "search system" to treat WHATEVER FILES I TELL IT TO as text files i'll never know. i think it's only designed for people who are looking for one of the default things like music or video on their hard drive, nothing useful though. so does that registry patch mean i'd have to do it for EVERY type of file i want to search in? bah, i'll make my own. -----Original Message----- From: Bill Thoen [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, 24 February 2004 10:25 AM To: MapInfo-L Subject: MI-L How to Search MapBasic Files Using XP's Bloody Stupid Search Assistant I finally found out why my XP Search Assistant wouldn't search for text within MapBasic (*.mb) files. It took FAR too much time to discover it too, and the answer is a doozy! They don't tell you this, but the S.A. will only search certain types of files. If you tell it to search *.mb files for text, it just comes back with "Sorry, nothing found." leaving out the all-import fact, "...because I can't search within *.mb files." To correct this, you have to patch your registry and tell XP that *.mb files are text files. Using a text editor, copy the following 5 lines (including the last blank line): REGEDIT4 [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.MB\PersistentHandler] @="{5e941d80-bf96-11cd-b579-08002b30bfeb}" and save it in a file called Patch.reg. Then double click on this reg file, and the next time you reboot, you should be able to search for text within *.mb files. Anyway, this worked for me. IMHO, this lousy XP O/S spends far too many resources animating the idiot puppy (one wonders where it goes when it has to squat...) and far too little on making error messages that tell what's actually gone wrong and how to fix it!!
