I guess the downside of this "mini workspace" is that you'll always get two windows 
with your table. This will also be the case if you select "Into current ampper" when 
you open the table. Isn't that correct ?

But then again if this solves your problem...

But using tables as "mini workspaces" sure doesn't make things easier to see thru. Of 
course you now knoe what you have done, but what if a new person is supposed to take 
over in let's say a year!

Maybe a print messege in the tab file would help:
!Table
!Version 100
Print "Modified Table: <name of tab file>" 
Open Table "file1" Hide
map From file1
set window frontwindow() max
Browse * From file1
set window frontwindow() max
