Peter,

You setup your proxy settings ('PROXY' page) with your HTTP proxy address
and port (should be there by default), add your user name and password, tick
'Proxy Requires Authentication' (if required). On the 'PORT MAPPING' page
you add your remote site the important parts here are the 'LOCAL PORT',
'REMOTE ADDRESS', and 'REMOTE PORT'. The local port is the TCP port you
want to use, I tend to add 10000 on to the port I want to use (eg. 10080 for
my first WMS server, 11080 for the next, etc) valid entries are between 1
and 65534, Ports between 1 and 1024 are generally used be existing services.
Next is the remote address, this is where you put the domain name of the
server you want to connect to (eg. atlas.walis.wa.gov.au or
www.mapinfo.com). Lastly is the remote port this is typically 80 (HTTP
Port) for a web server, but as Lars points out it can be anything. Once
this is done you can start the HTTPort software.

In MapInfo, Open the WMS Client, and click the Servers button (this allows
you to edit the server details). Select the WMS connection you want to use,
click edit and change the domain name to 127.0.0.1:XXXX, where XXXX is the
local port number you used in the HTTPort program (eg.
http://atlas.walis.wa.gov.au/servlet/com.esri.wms.Esrimap becomes
http://127.0.0.1:11180/servlet/com.esri.wms.Esrimap), now click OK.

Now when I try to connect to the WMS server, it actually links back to my
local machine and the HTTPort program creates the actual link.

This works fine for me, but like I said it may not work with all proxy
servers and WMS server, and it is slow. Using the HTTHost software may also
improve performance, but I haven't tried it yet. You can get it to go
faster by subscribing.

There are other software packages available for doing this, some are
restricted to specific applications.

Ian,

Are you able to briefly mention your setup, or is it too long winded.

I have been trying various methods myself without much luck.

Regards
Peter

Hi All,

I have had some success in using HTTPort (from http://www.htthost.com) to
create HTTP tunnels through our Proxy Server and provide the authentication
to the proxy server. I have successfully connected to the Australian Atlas
WMS server, the software is a little slow, but it worked.

Thanks to Ian Erickson and Lars Nielson, for your input.

If you are going to use this tool (or other HTTP tunnelling software), I
would check with your IT department before you start. This software may not
work with all WMS servers or all Proxy servers and firewalls.

Cheers Ian
