Matt - the personal geodatabase IS cool and there is no direct equivalent for MI. Various people have put tools up on Directions, or for sale, that make MI format data more portable.
However the way MI uses enterprise software like Oracle and (via Spatialware) SQL Server is also cool - for my money better than the ESRI equivalent - I might have been unlucky but I find SDE very fiddly. You can put different spatial data types into a single TAB file (unlike SHP) and because TAB is a very efficient format for spatial queries (though not for text) you can compress several different tables into one without necessarily seeing any degradation in performance.
