Not if the street grid is twisted against the meridians? Anyway, the case is a bit different as the roads are far from being a grid. Over here, you often have curved, windy roads which go back to a persistent medieval town structure. Another obstacle are footpaths in parks I use on the way. Park paths are neither straight not have short connections. In fact, I think it is a competition to put as much length (of paths) in a parks as possible to make it look bigger for the visitor.
