That seems to be the answer! The lesson learned is to always use "Fetch"  
before accessing fields from temporary tables. This explains a lot of
wierd table cursor behavior I've seen in the past, too.

I've been using MapInfo since ran under DOS, and I *still* keep learning 
new things about it!
