Hi Peter, I'm far from a VM expert but I think everything on the VM Layer Control Tools menu (including Reclassify, if that was what you were thinking of) is in the context of having an existing grid. All I have is a registered image. If VM had the functionality built in, I would imagine it would be part of "Create Grid > Import grid...".

I did make a tool converting a raster map in mapinfo (not all image types supported) to a vector map. This vector map could easy be converted to a VM grid.
