Learning MapBasic is probably where you'll want to start. Everything you can do in MapInfo can be done in MapBasic and then some. There is no one "general GIS" language; there's lots. But MapBasic has all the necessary functions to allow you to with points, lines and polygons, and you could study it for years and still never run out of new things to explore. >From MapBasic -- and it's a big step -- you'd move on to VB .NET, and you'll be ready for MapInfo's new version, which is still under development but will be coming out supposedly in the spring or early summer. VB .NET will also serve you in the general area of Windows programming, too. If you're totally new to programming, then I'd recommend you *first* try to teach yourself as much as you can, then sign up for a training course. Your local reseller can help you find one in your area (or you could come to Denver and take the one I teach ;-) By trying to learn some on your own first, you'll find that when you come to the course you will have questions and applications in mind and you can use the opportunity to also get "free" consulting from the instructor. If you just start by taking the two-day class, I don't think you'll get as much out of it than if you do a little self-teaching first. - Bill Thoen --------------------------------------------------------------------- List hosting provided by Directions Magazine | www.directionsmag.com | To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Message number: 15258
