Hugh, It sounds like you are doing the correct thing by using the four corner points.
I've had this happen once or twice, and suggest the following: I suspect that you may be entering one corner value twice and thus MapInfo is giving the error. Examine your map X and Y that you have entered for each point ... if they form a perfect rectangle, you should have two identical pairs of X and Y values (but obviously different for each corner). Alternatively, make sure that you have chosen the correct projection and aren't trying to map UTM coords to a long/lat projection. Hope this helps!
