Hi Ian, I'd have thought that MapInfo would be monitoring this list and answer questions like this .... With the Manifold list, the Manifold team seems to be in there furthering development by responding to list queries ...
Anyway, from a user group meeting a week ago, we were told by the MapInfo rep that version 8 will be shipped later this month. He also showed a screen capture of a prototype .NET MI that looked a bit like ArcView with the layer control docked to the left side of the screen and a few other changes on the screen. Apparently MI will continue development and upgrade releases of the current version of MapInfo / MapBasic for the next 12 - 18 months. But in the next six months, they will release a Beta .NET version for users to trial and send feedback to them, with the goal of doing a .NET release early next year. If you are on the maintenance plan, you'll continue to receive your upgrades of current versions, but will also be able to get the new .NET versions. The idea being that once the majority are comfortable with .NET they'll switch off development of the current MapInfo/MapBasic combination. If I've missed or misinterpreted something, and someone from MapInfo wants to clarify for the list, please feel free to do so. MapInfo 8.0 has been released and I have already had a look at it. Some nice new features has been added. One feature that I could have used years ago when I did a lot of vectorization is the Stream digitizing that adds a new node to a polyline/polygon when you move the cursor more then x pixels. THis is mainly because it is painfully slow. I have found it usefull as a extra utility, but don't rely on it (like i do mapinfo) for day to day work.
