IDRISI is an old favourite. Reasonably priced with remote sensing
functionality as well as GIS.

If you're working directly with OS data, need full compatibility with
MapInfo data and over 100 other formats and need a competitive product to
all the other popular GIS's out there - Cadcorp is definitely gaining a lot
in popularity over the past few years. Fantastic product.
They are one of the only systems that support Ordnance Survey data with no
translation. I used it all the time at my old post with a UK local
authority. We stopped using MI and ESRI. Their support is fantastic and
the product is leading edge. I know they are gaining in the US as well.
Very simple GIS to very complex - you get to pick the level that you need.
And no need for 'addons' or extensions and relatively cheaper than other of
the popular packages. Those are the main reasons our evaluators picked the
product.

Good luck,
Steve

Subject: MI-L Reasonably Priced GIS/CAD Packages For A Small Business
Hello Listers,
Sorry to drift slightly off topic but I have been asked by a client for
advice on cheap, off the shelf fairly basic GIS software packages. My
client is a small planning consultancy and simply needs a package which
will allow him to import, display and do simple analysis on geographical
information compatible with most data formats in particular Ordnance
Survey products. Basically what he wants to do in his own words is:
"Open OS maps, draw a few lines and dots, and then put the resultant
maps in reports"
I have looked at and have experience with most of the main vendors but
would welcome any input from you all.
Thanks very much for your help.
