Dear Friends,

I while ago I found this PPT and I share with you this quote from Ron Briggs
from UT Dallas; I guess this is a bit old probably from 1996 but thought
might be of your interest

The Religious Tenets of GIS

ArcInfo is the only true GIS
Intergraph is the only used GIS
MAPINFO is the only useable GIS

In my GIS life experience I've used GenaMap (good product), Bentley
GeoGraphics (awful) and then I came across MapInfo and would never  change
it; right now I am working in ArcGis 8 because my client wants it like that,
and I can say that MapInfo is a MUCH better tool.

I work with both on a daily basis, and am a fan of both. On the whole I
would conclude simply that MapInfo is better for some things but ArcGIS
definitely has the lead in other ways.
ArcGIS pre version 9.1 was a bit flaky, but the latest offering is much
improved, particularly if you do any sort of spatial analysis. Many
annoyingly unavailable tools have been added at this release and are
available via the toolbox or Model Builder which is a great tool. The
geoprocessing framework also seems to have been revamped as the
performance of many spatial operations seems to be much improved.
For ease of use, flexibility of querying and rapidly producing decent
looking cartographic outputs, MapInfo still has it for me.

That's my ten cents worth.

Cheers Dan

I'm watching this debate with avid interest as our company is moving
back to ArcGIS after 3 years with Mapinfo. I've not used ArcGIS and am
wondering what the Ubermanagers have gotten us into...

Keep the feedback coming!

Personally I believe there are two points strongly in favor of ArcGIS -
ModelBuilder and Data Interoperability. MapInfo has nothing like this.

ModelBuilder is an intuitive graphic environment, that enables ordinary
user to store entire work flows, make them into handy tools ("black
boxes"), and exchange such tools with other users. And ModelBuilder also
allows for easy Python scripting.

Data Interoperability is like having FME embedded inside the GIS
package, i.e. open almost any format on-the-fly without offline
conversion (like UT, and also shape).

But I agree that ArcGIS has a much higher price tag, which counts
heavily in MapInfo's favor. And MapInfo may be easier to use for a
common user, although that's often not measureable in any objective way.

Sorry for the dissent with the common sentiments on the list :-)
