I suggest you take a look at the work of Charles Joseph Minard.

His best known work is a map of Napoleon's March on Moscow (an 18th century
anti-war poster), but he had also created many other maps & graphics
depicting flow data (like migration) in geographic space & time.  More info

The one at the link below of rail traffic in France & England is one of my
favorites and likely required an incredible amount of research and travel to
bring all the data together back in 1862.
