Hi Ian,

Here is the arcgis definition for the Stereo 1970 coordinate system:

PROJCS["Stereo_70",GEOGCS["GCS_Dealul_Piscului_1970",DATUM["D_Dealul_Piscului_1970",SPHEROID["Krasovsky_1940",6378245,298.3]],PRIMEM["Greenwich",0],UNIT["Degree",0.017453292519943295]],PROJECTION["Double_Stereographic"],PARAMETER["False_Easting",500000],PARAMETER["False_Northing",500000],PARAMETER["Longitude_Of_Origin",25],PARAMETER["Scale_Factor",0.99975],PARAMETER["Latitude_Of_Origin",46],UNIT["Meter",1]]

This should turn into this line for your PRJ file:
"Stereo 1970", 31, 1001, 7, 25, 46, 0.99975, 500000, 500000

You need MapInfo 7.0 or better to use this and I'm not sure about the 1001 above, so check it yourself.

Regards
Uffe

Subject: [MI-L] Romanian Projection Systems

Hello All,

I am having trouble trying to deal with some maps in a Romanian projection.  I am unsure of the projection system (as it is not identified on the map) but have been advised that the maps are of a vintage consistent with the use of Stereo(graphic) 70.  However, what little information I can dig up about this projection suggests that the base unit is in metres whereas the hard copy maps have grid lines in lat/long (degrees/minutes/seconds).

Has anyone come across Stereo 70  previously or indeed have a projection description which I can insert into the Mapinfo.prj file.  I’m told that ArcGis has a Stereo 70 projection capability.  Possibly someone has used the ArcGis projection parameters to develop a MapInfo projection.

Any help would be great!

Thanks,

Ian
