Title: Satellite Tracking

Fellow Listers,
I have a request from a colleague re the following:

"I am seeking knowledge on whether it is possible to monitor an isotope tracer in a marine environment using satellite imagery.

Whether any organisation has tried it before and who to contact.
I know that in the USA isotopes like beryllium are used as a tracer which has a 35 day half life to determine contamination of marine sediment from dredge spoil disposal sites, however this is monitored using labour intensive sediment grabs and lab analysis.

What I want to know is, if an isotope tracer can be made into an appropriate particle size to represent marine sediments, then deployed into the marine environment with no environmental impact, then tracked by satellite over a period of say 5 -10 years in total (at 6 monthly intervals, or as required) to determine where the tracer particles have distributed.

The intent is to provide short-medium term monitoring of marine sediment dispersion to assist in determining appropriate coastal erosion management responses."

We would appreciate any input as to viability & contact for details.
Kind Regards,
Nola
