If you search MapInfo's MapInfo-L archives site at
http://testdrive.mapinfo.com/tdc/mapinfo-l.nsf/$about?openabout
for the key phrase "SUM: MI A thought experiment with Great
Circles", you'll find some good hints about the formulae
involved. (You can search for "SUM: AND Great Circles"--note that
case matters on the AND operator--or just search for "Great
Circle" to find everything about htem we've ever talked about.)
Anyway, a very good web site listed in that message that has all
the formulae for great circles is
http://www.best.com/~williams/avform.htm. I used it to write an
MapInfo app that plots a great circle route around the world
passing through two specified points, and another to verify that
MapInfo uses great circle distance in its Distance() function.
