TOUGH YEAR FOR FARMERS ON THE WAY. Washington Post, 18 Dec. 1998. Overall farm income for the USA is $59 billion but the figure was bolstered by $6 billion in emergency federal aid. Agriculture Secretary Dan Glicikman said more aid will be needed in 1999 to support farmers struggling with low pork and grain prices and trying to recover from natural disasters. Income for next year is expected to be in the mid-$50 billion range, about 15% below 1997 levels. And a note that went over the list at agriculture.com..... Have a local family w/problems I wouldn't like. Supporter has full time job-just overwhelmed w/bills. He came & asked me if I knew the best place to buy K1 Kerosene. I said no, it seems to have gotten less popular than 10 yrs ago. I asked if he had one of those little space heaters for "cozying up" living room or something. He said-no, furnace went out, can't afford new one (firebox rusted through) and he's using a SPACE HEATER (the forced air salamander type) to heat his whole house!!! Of course, this happens @ Xmas time & it's been ZERO all week. I'm sure we all have experience w/those heaters-can you imagine the noise & smell? He's got a big house too! Anyway, it kind of made my problems seem miniscule @ the time. Ron Peace on this Earth.....
