Adrian: We tried the maintenance contract route, too. Our experience was
quite negative. We were not notified, ever, of the release of any upgrades,
minor or major. I heard about all of them through MapInfo-L. When
contacted by phone, MapInfo customer service didn't seem to know how the
contract was supposed work, and seemed generally confused. None of the
upgrades were ever sent to us, but I was allowed to download them. The
cost of the contract vs. just buying upgrades didn't seem to save much
money, but that also may have been a function of timing. Strange how the
financial situation seems to always work in MapInfo's favor.

I know I doing some bashing here, but there are aspects of our relationship
with MapInfo that somewhat bitter. It's bitter-sweet when dealing with even
the best software companies. In fairness, from an overview perspective,
MapInfo does better than most.
