The grid API is similar to the raster handler API. Blue Marble and
Schlosser
Geographics have successfully built raster handlers.

No, MapBasic is not being phased out, but because of its interpreted
nature,
it is not well suited to handle the types of iterations commonly
encountered
with grid files (500x500=250,000 cells).
