I'd go for the VM2 solution. It does a beautiful job of contouring (regions or 
polylines) through an 
interpolated point data set. You may find bits and pieces around which may help with a 
free 
solution, but VM2 offers the complete functional package.

Since you're in the UK, I'd be happy to run a sample of your own data through it and 
send back the 
contour results.
