It depends on the number of contours you wish to thread through the grid. For a low number, running on a 500x500 grid and a well-spec'd machine, I would say a "short delay". I was recently running 26 (very lively) level contours through some data of various sizes (from 10s x 10s to 100s x 100s) recently and the longest delay was a few minutes. The smaller ones completed in 20-30 seconds.
