My first MapWorld was in 1995, after I had been using the product for about 18
months. I thought that I would improve my knowledge of the MapInfo products by
going through the "advanced" break-out session path. All I learned was one
minor tip the whole time. In the feedback, MI decided they needed more material
in those "advanced" sessions.

The next MapWorld I went to was in 1997. This time, the more interesting and
useful information provided was by some users who gave presentations. My
feeling about the sessions hosted by vendor representatives was that they were
sales pitches thinly veiled as application development information. The main
reason I went in '97 was to present the "wish list" to MapInfo management.

I do plan to attend in '99, as it is in my home state again. There is enough
good that comes from meeting other users and discussing issues with them (and
with the MapInfo team) to make it worth my while. If you are coming from such a
distance as to have modest travel costs, I would wait to see the session titles
and speakers before committing to going.

I understand that this year, they are taking a different approach to who gets
to speak. In past years, if you thought you had a good topic and were
interested in speaking, MapInfo would review your material and (if accepted)
give you a discounted rate for registration. The last plan I heard was that '99
speakers will be by invitation only. This is good, as MI should have enough
experience with the user base to know who will come across the best.

Don't forget that the "Wish List" still exists at http://www.ffbic.com/mapinfo/
-- any last minute suggestions?
