Hi All!
Please allow me to add a few knots to this thread.
First, I am also as a rule skeptical to 'new' or proprietary formats.
But not all the best things in life are old or free.
Second, I belive that Lizardtech have made it clear that they will
develop MrSID for the use in GIS. For example, they are talking of
implementing a georeference in the image files. This is an important
point.
Also, the MrSID compressor is capable of mosaicking several images into
one file. This is worth paying for.
OK, it may not be lossless, but if we compare handling 500 Mb to 20 Mb,
I'm willing to stand a little loss.
Especially since I can't tell the difference, not being able to open the
500 Mb file at all, because of memory or other system limitations.
I tested PNG in Paint Shop Pro. An 8.9 Mb BMP file shrank to 6.7 Mb
using PNG. Not very impressive. Using JPG for comparison gave a 1 Mb
file. But of course blocky, pixelated and useless for GIS work.
I would still bet a penny on MrSID for a future standard setter in the
use of GIS imagery, at least for the present time.
Let's hope for the release of the MapInfo viewer, so that you all can
see for yourself.

These are my personal reflections, given to the best of my knowledge and
in no way intended as arrogant ignorance.
