The North Arrow to Ampersand switch has happened to me when a MapInfo
map embedded in a Word document was printed from another PC which
did not have the MapInfo TrueType fonts loaded.
The solution was to load the fonts and then the north arrow printed fine. I
can not explain why from your pdf the north arrow appears after a reboot
and then converts to an ampersand for subsequent pages. My
suggestion would be to check if the MI fonts are present.
