We use even another simple but powerfull solution to inalize/improve and preserve the layout of maps saved as metafiles (usually) from MapInfo workspaces. It is Adobe's Page Maker. There you gust put all MapInfo graphics and legends together, add textual descriptions, etc. and save those final map layouts.

There are 4 main reasons why we do that:
1. MapInfo is not able to keep safely all the information which one would initally keep in its layout window. We tried using original MapInfo features to create and keep maps to be printed, but many constant failures and many different problems with scales, setups, printing speed, etc. forced us to give up this idea. The truth is that layout of paper maps is NOT YET solved in MapInfo (4.02, 4.5, 4.52);
2. One can have Page Maker files containing large collections of map material generated in MapInfo, one can easily adjust the paper size to vave large maps. While saving to metafile (vector), the scale of an original map will remain perfectly the same. This works even better that original MapInfo layout window with its frames;
3. One can save all that stuff into PDF format quite easily;
4. IMPORTANT: Production of printouts can be made VERY easy while going this way. FIRST: you can print a large file with many maps at once (even several copies); SECOND: it would make a colour printout about two times faster (the same quality), than if you would print from MapInfo.

Subject: MI Illustrator vs Corel

Dear Laura & MapInfo Users:

What are you referring to when you say:

- "It appears that a lot of people use the Adobe Illustrator, ..." to
pretty up their maps.

- And what is your experience with Corel 8?

I would like to learn, what advantages it would have to use a second
application besides MapInfo to improve the look & feel of maps.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge with me.
