Hi Paul,

Before joining the Ordnance Survey last year I worked for the London Borough
of Hounslow. If I remember correctly, while there we used a translation
utility sold by Mapinfo (though it could have been developed by one of their
associated Companies) to import OS map tiles that were in DXF format. This
utility was quite good and did allow you to import loads of tiles at a time,
only limited by the speed of your PC.

You could also extract one layer/theme from them at a time if required so as
to produce a set of mapinfo tables, one table per theme. This allowed zoom
layering of the data which was very impressive and useful - surprisingly
quick to display too (tho we did not have quite so many tiles as you). While
you can import tiles into one layer, this table will be HUGE and does not
look so good when displayed or plotted (too much detail) - I strongly
recommend the zoom layering approach. This way the more you zoom in, the
greater the level of detail displayed. Excellent for a GIS application.

I do remember that the utility was a bit pricy and a little slow, but the
end results were good. There could well be a cheaper solution available now!

One issue to remember is how you will incorporate updates to the tiles in
the future? Unless things have changed, under your Service Level Agreement
with the OS you should get map tile revisions on a rolling programme. This
could mean map tile updates every few months. If you are tasked with
maintaining this dataset - plan ahead! Will you re-run the translation
process for all tiles again? How will you know the version of the map tiles
used in the table? I never did find an easy answer to this problem!

Good luck!

Pete, Ordnance Survey, UK.

Hi,
I hope that someone can help.

I have several sets of DXF files (close to 350 files per set), which I wish
to import into Mapinfo, these files are all British Ordnance Survey 1:1250
scale map files. What I would like to do is import all of the separate files
in each set into one single Mapinfo table. Both the universal translator and
the ">table >import dxf" do not seem to allow this.
Do any other "Preferably free" utilities exist that would allow this.

I would be grateful for any assistance.
