Bill,
Thanks. The Shapefile was created in Arcview. The projection file included with
Shapelink includes the State Plane 83-feet option, which I used to convert to Mapinfo.
As I understand it, the HPGN and 83 datums are not that much different, so I wouldn't
expect much difference in the conversion (?). Since the projection file for Mapinfo
(v4.0) I was using didn't have this definition in it, I cut it out and pasted it in,
but Mapinfo still doesn't recognize the projection. The conversion as it stands fits
the other layers, which are in Mapinfo Lat/long, fairly well. However when I try to
save the layer as a Lat/Long projection and then pull it up, the fit is shifted rather
badly.

MapInfo has no HPGN datum in its .prj file, and we also use the original
NADCON which does not recognize any .HPGN (aka HARN) related files for
datum conversion. the original NADCON converts datums using the *.los and
*.las files under MapInfo in its algorithms. Also, if the coordinate
system used from the source file is not listed in the mapinfow.prj file, MI
will not recognize it and will be unable to translate it.
Was this shapefile produced in something other than an ESRI product? I
didn't know if they supported NADCON HPGN datum conversion yet.
Thanks,
-Bill

Subject: MI: Shapelink bug?
I am converting shape files to Mapinfo files using Shapelink version 1.1.
The conversion completes successfully and I am able to import into Mapinfo
(v4.0), however when I ask for the projection of the layers, Mapinfo
reports that they are in an unknown projection. Also, the projection
checking program proj.mbx does not display a projection for these converted
files.
I am confident of the original projection of the shape files, which are
Washington State Plane (South) in feet, with the HPGN datum. I am using
the Washington State Plane South ( 1983 datum, feet ) projection for
conversion in Shapelink.
Anyone run into this problem? Any advice?
