Just a suggestion ...
We were having problems on one machine (a Micron P2/300, 64 mb RAM, 6.4gb
HD, lots of diskspace available) and were having problems with polygon
textures showing on-screen as black, or white, when they should have been
clear. A good suggestion from our MapInfo VAR (Schlosser Geographic Systems
in Seattle) was that it might be related to the graphics card (which was
high-end and integrated into the motherboard). We turned down the graphics
acceleration, and the errant screen draws went away.
On my own machine, I loaded a program which required HighColor instead of
the 256 colors I usually use (DeLorme's Eartha Global Explorer) and
immediately noticed a rash of errors and blue screens and freeze-ups, on
what had formerly been a rock-stable PC. I switched back to my
plain-vanilla 256 colors/Large Fonts setting, and all is fine once again. I
use a Matrox Millenium with 4mb, and while it's not being used to the Nth
degree running 256 colors, it certainly is trouble-free.
You might make sure you're running the latest video driver, and you might
try turning down the complexity and the graphic acceleration. If you have
success, you might let us all know.
