Greetings, List.

It's nice to have an occasional diversion intrude on the regular
threads of discussion. However, let's not confuse an optical illusion
with any software malfunctions.

The puzzle is, in fact, an optical illusion. The overall area of the
large "triangle" should be: 13 x 5 / 2 = 32.5 square units.

The sum of the inner figures is: 12 + 5 + 7 + 8 = 32 square units.

Therefore, neither of the large "triangles" is really a triangle.

That sould be proof enough. The triangle effect is caused by
deliberatly drawing the contours with thick lines to conceal the
"bend" in the hypotenuse.

For those of you of little faith - print out the puzzle and place a
strightedge as accurately as you can on the the two ends of the
hypotenuse and draw the connecting line. This line will NOT go
throught the point where the two inner triangles touch (it CAN'T).
You'll see how the upper triangle "bends" inward and the lower
"bends" outward - both just enough to account for that half square
unit.
Best regards,
Alex Eshed
