Stuart,
Let me make two assumptions : 1- your maps are in layouts 2- you have MI 5
In those conditions, MI will export layouts as whole windows of 24X36,
whether they show in toto or in part on your screen.
What you will get is an image that, if you define it at 120 ppi, will give
you the exact size as the original. Forget about all the ppi definitions
that you will see with different image editors/viewers, and also about MI
might tell you. It is 120 ppi if you want to keep your scale.
What image you will get is another story. Under the assumed conditions, you
will get a "map" (in the image) that will be displaced and shrunk.
Displacement means a different origin and different left and up margins.
Shrinkage means that the actual map will be about 94% of the original. That
compounds the effects on bottom and right margins and your "map" will be
completely off-centered in the 24x36 page and off-scale of course.
This is a "feature" that MI just recognized as "unexpected" no more than 2
weeks ago. The hope they will be able to fix it ....
If you want to increase the resolution, let us say you printer wants 300
ppi, when you export your window, you may ask for a window size of 60x90.
You will get your 300 pixels per inch when you reduce the print size to
24x36. That makes for pretty hefty file. You may want to consider alternate
format (png or wmf)
But you face another problem, memory size. Before any export, MI create a
virtual image that is holding every single pixel positions corresponding to
the size of exported image at 120 ppi. It does that in memory I believe. I
have not gotten confirmation from MI on that point, but no "contradiction";
my 64Meg are good for about 400 sq.in. (4 letter size pages is ok, 5 no
good).
The MI problems that I have outlined can be expected with any export format,
wmf or raster. And we will be stuck with them for a while; I do not expect
to see them solved with 5.5; beta is the same (MI was not even aware of the
problem until late march), everything will depend upon the urgency that MI
will bring in solving them.
Sorry if I have discouraged you a little, but I took the opportunity to
summarize a subject that has been central to my life for the last two/three
weeks.
