In a former life I used ER Mapper and really enjoyed it. I understand that
6.0 will do ortho rectification. Great addition to an already powerful
tool. Even if the compression is only almost as good as MrSid then you
really have to stop and think. ER Mapper is priced less than MrSid and does
a lot more.

I haven't seen any head to head comparisons of ER Mapper vs
MrSID so can't
comment on that. However, the ER Mapper decompression works
like lightening
in MapInfo. I tested it out by mosaicing 6 x 1:100,000
scanned maps (total
~350MB), then compressing it to 23MB (!), then viewing the
compressed mosaic
in MapInfo. The re-draw performance was (subjectively)
better than you
would get with a 23MB tiff file and image quality of the
entire mosaic was
superb.
